Why We Fight

Someone from Angel's past arrives at Wolfram & Hart looking for the vampire — it's Lawson, a man Angel sired. Lawson wants answers from his sire, wants to know why he can't feel nothing after years of killing, without a purpose.

Flashback

In 1943, during the war, Angel, living in New York, is recruited by a newly founded agency — the [Demon Research Initiative] — to retrieve a German submarine (captured by the Americans) in the deep of the ocean, as well as to save its remaining crew — it seems that something very nasty (from inside) attacked them and killed almost everyone down there.

In the submarine, Angel finds three cruel vampires: the Prince of Lies, Nostroyev, and... Spike (with black hair and wearing a nazi jacket, taken from a nazi he has just eaten); the three of them were captured by the nazis, whose intention was to create an army of vampires.

Soon, Prince of Lies and Nostroyev are dusted by Angel; Spike, although annoying Angel very much, is spared for some reason — Angel can't bring himself to kill his "grandson"...

When a young American sailor (Lawson) is mortally wounded by the nazi official who is been kept prisoner, Angel has to sire him because he is the only one who is able to fix the submarine and save the men who had survived the vampires' attack.

When the ship emerges, Angel sends Lawson away, saying the next time he sees him, he will kill him; also, Spike is invited to leave the submarine.

In the present, Lawson threatens to kill Wesley, Fred and Gunn; however, Angel manages to dust Lawson and free his friends.

Smile Time

Joss Whedon

When children start dying, the Fang Gang figure out that the cause is a TV show called Smile Time. Angel goes to the studio, and in entering there, is turned into a puppet — for Spike's total amusement.

Also, Nina, the werewolf girl, arrives at Wolfram & Hart to spend the night in a cage (it's full moon). Wesley tells Angel she is interested in him and he should go for it, but Angel (not a puppet yet) is insecure. And when he goes to talk to her (already a puppet), she almost eats him...

Eventually, the Fang Gang discover that demons are running the children show and manage to defeat them; Angel's puppet condition will cease within days. And he and Nina start a relationship, when the vampire-puppet finally agrees to have breakfast with her...

A Hole in the World

Joss Whedon

Angel decides to send Spike as a rove agent to anywhere he chooses, because he thinks they working together isn't working; Spike accepts the offer, thrilled about the idea of being "007 without a suit".

However, an ancient god-king — [Illyria] — trying to reenter our world, infects Fred's body, and the priorities of the Fang Gang quickly change.

Angel and Spike fly to Cotswolds, England (first time on a plane for both vampires), in order to find a cure for Fred in the [Deeper Well], a burial place for the [Old Ones].

Unfortunately, as saving Fred would have meant killing thousands of people, the two Champions return home defeated; Fred dies is Wesley's arms and [Knox] turns out to be a traitor — it's him who has chosen Fred as host for the god he worships since he was eleven.

Shells

Steven S. DeKnight

Angel and Spike return from England heart-broken, but thinking of bringing Fred back by restoring her soul. However, they are told by [Dr Sparrow] that the girl's soul was destroyed when Illyria resurrected.

Meanwhile, Wesley, after finding out that Gunn (without knowing) helped Illyria's resurrection by releasing from the customs its sarcophagus, stabs him.

With the help of Knox (who ends up being shot to death by Wesley), Illyria tries to rise his Army of Doom, and opens a portal at Wolfram & Hart — just to discover that the soldiers died millions of years ago.

Wesley, touched by Illyria's  appearance (the god-king is using Fred's shell, after all) accepts to help him adapt to our world, if he agrees to stop killing people — what he does.

And Spike tells Angel he won't leave — he feels things will get ugly in the next months and wants to stay and fight; it's what Fred would want him to do, it's what he wants to do.
