Conviction

In his office at [Wolfram & Hart], Angel opens an envelope and the [amulet] he had given to Buffy (Buffy/Chosen) falls onto the floor. From it, Spike appears, yelling in pain and burning from inside.

Just Rewards

Nineteen days have gone by since Sunnydale was destroyed and Spike died saving the world. The essence of the vampire with a soul got trapped inside the amulet. Wesley, Fred and Lorne are surprised when Spike mentions he has a soul — Angel had "forgotten" to tell them the news. Spike wants to know about Buffy, and Angel, annoyed, reveals she is in Europe:

Spike: You can't keep her from me.
Angel: She's not mine to keep. Or yours.
Spike: Says you. You have no idea what we had.

And [Harmony] (now Angel's secretary) gets totally disgusted to learn that Spike and Buffy were together.

Wes and Lorne find out that the only way to free Spike is destroying the amulet, so he can rest in peace. Fred thinks that this is "like kill him."

Spike tries to leave Los Angeles, but always gets dragged back to Wolfram & Hart — the amulet is owned by the evil law firm, and so he is.

Concerning business, Angel decides that Wolfram & Hart will stop supplying dead bodies to a client — a necromancer called Magnus Hainsley, who uses the bodies to put into them demon's essences. Hainsley gets very pissed off, kills Angel's messenger and sends him back to Wolfram & Hart in a bucket.

Angel and Spike go to Hainsley's mansion; the necromancer orders his servant to kill both vampires. Angel kills the servant — with a spoon — and Spike mocks him. They argue, Spike is mad at Angel because he is living a very good (and fancy) life now, Angel is mad at Spike because he, after getting a soul, suffered just "three months in the basement, while him had to endure more than a century of torment." When Spike disappears (against his own will), Angel goes fighting Hainsley. However, as Hainsley is a necromancer, he can control Angel; he doesn't kill him just because "the [Senior Partners] have bigger plans" for Angel.

After the fight, Spike is dragged to Hainsley's office, and the necromancer makes an offer to him — make the vampire flesh again, giving him Angel's body.

Later, in Angel's bedroom, Spike appears and tells Angel all about Hainsley's plan; he says he plays for the good guys now. He tells Angel he overhead the Fang Gang's discussion (about putting Spike to rest).

Angel and Spike go to the cemetery; Angel is about to destroy de amulet when the necromancer shows up, and knocks Angel down. Spike comments he is late. Angel is taken to Hainsley's mansion; lying on a table and under the necromancer's control, he has to listen to Spike say that after Hainsley put his essence in Angel's body, he'll have

...everything I deserve, everyone I deserve. Maybe I'll have a go at that Fred. She seems like a goer. And she seems to really look up to you.

However, when Hainsley is transferring Spike's essence to Angel's body — it has to go through the necromancer's body — Spike takes control of Hainsley, making it possible for Angel to fight and kill the enemy.

Next day, Fred goes to her lab and finds Spike there. He tells her he is being pulled to Hell, and is very scared. Spike begs Fred to help him.

Unleashed

The Fang Gang have to deal with a girl — [Nina Ash] — bitten by a werewolf. She herself has become one and Angel wants to save her.

Meanwhile, Spike, annoyed because all people are occupied with the "werewolf girl", begs Fred not to forget about his situation — it is getting worse as time goes by, and he thinks he won't be coming back the next time he disappears; Fred promises him she will help.

Hellbound

Spike is being haunted by a spirit called The Reaper; it wants to send the vampire to hell.

The Fang Gang finds out that the Reaper was Matthias Pavayne, a European doctor in the 18th Century who used to kill his patients, performing unnecessary surgeries. After being persecuted in his homeland, he fled to California, where ended up killed by Wolfram & Hart 20 years later, in a ritual performed in order to deconsecrate the site chosen by seers for the new LA branch building. After his death, Pavayne kept cheating hell by sending there other spirits in his place.

Spike manages to fight the Reaper and, in the end, when he is about to be made flesh again — Fred had found out a way — he has to choose between save her (who Pavayne is choking) or jump into the machine area of influence. He chooses to do the right thing — save Fred and go on being incorporeal.

In this episode, for the first time Spike learns about the prophecy [Shanshu]; Fred explains to him that if Angel saves a lot of lives, he will become human as a reward. Spike comments that to Angel, who says prophecies are just lies; what is waiting for both of them is hell, indeed. They bond a little, and Angel confesses that he liked [William]'spoems — to what Spike says "You like Barry Manilow!"
