On Souls and Vampires

I'm nothing like Angel!

Spike is the newest vampire with a soul in Joss' Buffyverse. He chose to seek a soul to be the kind of man who would never hurt the girl he loves. In a dark cave, supposedly in Africa, he endured trials — torture, pain, suffering — and won his soul back.

Spike, differently from Angelus, always seemed to be a candidate to enter the exclusive club of the vampires with a soul — or even become a real boy one day.

The I in Team

Spike has just been chipped and finds out that he can fight demons:

Giles: Um, thinking about your affliction and, uh, your newfound discovery that you can fight only demons; it occurs to me that I realize this is completely against your nature. Has it occurred to you that there may be a higher purpose-

Spike cuts him short.

Surprise

[The Judge] is able to kill anyone with any trace of humanity; he says about Spike:

Judge: You!
Spike: Ho, ho, ho. What's that, mate?
Judge: You two (Spike and Drusilla) stink of humanity. You share affection and jealousy.

Innocence

The Judge touches Angelus:

Spike: Hurts, doesn't it?
Angelus: Well, you know, it kinda itches a little.
Spike: Don't just stand there. Burn him.
Angelus: Gee, maybe he's broken.
Spike: What the hell is going on?
Judge: This one... cannot be burnt. He is clean.
Spike: Clean? You mean, he's...
Judge: There's no humanity in him.

Spike, after being chipped, starts hanging around with the Scoobies, eventually falling in love with the Slayer. He wants to be a man, and suffers when he realizes he isn't — differently from Angelus, who hated Buffy for having made him feel human:

-Innocence-

Angelus: She (Buffy) made me feel like a human being. That's not the kind of thing you just forgive.

-The Gift-

Spike: I know you'll never love me. I know that I'm a monster. But you treat me like a man. And that's...

-Smashed-

Spike: A man can change.
Buffy: You're not a man. You're a thing.
Spike: Stop walking away!
Buffy: Don't touch me!

-Seeing Red-

Spike: I've tasted the life of two Slayers. But with Buffy... This isn't the way it's supposed to be. It's the chip. Steel and wires and silicon. It won't let me be a monster. And I can't be a man. I'm nothing.

Angelus was cursed with a soul, and hated it. Spike, after hurting Buffy, decides to seek a soul, in order to give Buffy what she deserves:

Spike: Give me what I want. Make me what I was, so Buffy can get what she deserves.
