MUSIC
Besides acting, James Marsters
sings, plays the guitar and writers songs.
He was introduced to music by his father at
nine; at 14, he used to play in bars, and
while acting on BtVS, he used to
perform at 14 Bellow in Santa Monica, and at
The Gig and Opium Den in Hollywood; also,
James performed with [Four Star Mary] at The
Garage, in London (06/14/2001) and at the 14
Bellow, in Santa Monica (02/09/2002).
[JM/Four Star Mary report]
From 2002 to 2004, he performed
with his band Ghost of the Robot; after they
split up, James returned to do solo concerts
as well as record albums.
[GIGS]
About the lyrics he writes, James
tells that when he writes them he speaks
about things he wouldn't have the nerve
speaking in a conversation, for instance —
and just because they are accompanied by a
melody, nobody cares... Frequently, he
writes about or to his girls — Smile
and Angel (Helena); Goodbye
(Liz Stauber); Patricia (his German
girlfriend); Bad (a girl he met in
England, during the 2003 GoTR Tour); Katie
(about a girl who didn't want anything with
him because she was... gay) are some of
them.
The singing thing is much more vulnerable
and scary to me both because it is live
and somehow for me, sustaining a note and
producing that sound makes you dig into an
emotional realm or at least makes you
connected to it. Also, the fact that I am
singing my own material or material that I
was on hand for when it was being made and
I really know what it is about. So there
is a real terror of 'God, I'm going to be
too honest today' and then the joy of
'Hey, they love it!' I can't tell this to
my own brother, you know. I can't tell
most of this stuff to anybody but I'm just
singing it out and they like it. (Vulkon Cleveland - 2003)
Acting, I can do anything. I'm
not embarrassed. I can drop my pants for a
nickel. But singing gives me hives. I fear
it, which is why I do it. (Buffy
Magazine - 2001)
I want fire. I guess I tend to
sing songs about people who are gonna go
to jail, who've just killed someone, who
just had their heart broken, who just got
screwed over by the Establishment, who
just lost their house. I was singing songs
for Joss [Whedon], and he's like, 'Do you
have any happy songs for us today, James?'
I guess I'm self-pitying enough that the
sad stuff hits me the most. (Buffy
Magazine - 2001)
Whose footsteps am I gonna
follow? William Shatner? There's so much
egg-on-the-face possible. When I go into a
club, I don't fool myself. The reason I'm
there is because I'm on a really good TV
show. There's probably some other guy who
didn't get that slot because of me. I'm
aware that people will book me into clubs
even if I'm no good, so I just try really
hard not to suck. (Buffy Magazine -
2001)
If you really examine the
lyrics you'll learn a few things about me
that might be surprising actually.
Sometimes I can write a songs and I think,
people are gonna go, "you're a freak" And
then they just hum along and say, "That's
a beautiful song." It's just an amazing
experience. That's what art does, it
reminds people that they are not alone.
You say "Wow, I feel that too! I thought
it was just me! I thought that I was a
weird freaky person; everybody's like
that! Wow I'm not alone." (SFX
- 2003)
Singing on Buffy, the Vampire
Slayer
In the Buffy's musical
episode — Once More, With Feeling
— James sings Rest in Peace, Life'sa
Show and Drawn to the Fire.
A lot of the cast were afraid,
they were so public about not being able
to sing, they weren't supposed to be able
to sing. I myself have been singing for so
long. There are places that music can take
you emotionally that words cannot and the
way Joss wrote it, the characters can't
express themselves anymore by just
talking, they are forced to jump up into
song. Shakespeare did the same thing by
going into moral anguish, and Joss turned
this on it's head and forced people to
sing about stuff they should shut up about
and there was, a lot of the emotional arcs
of the season really intersected in that
episode. And a lot of important moments
for the characters came in that episode.
The music kicked in and you would just get
carried into the thick of it. So much so
that we went to do the next script
("Tabula Rasa"), we were just like, this
is boring! We're wearing different
costumes and we're calling each other
'Randy'! (The Harvest - 2003)

LYRICS
Patricia
She had a
piano
And her
hands danced lustfully on the keys
She has a
pen and a paper
And she
draws her favourite people and one is me
She
wasn't s'posed to be cool
Now I'm
her fool
But I
don't care
She's
given me a passkey
That has
led me to what is
Patricia,
Patricia
Patricia,
Patricia
Small
calves
Dark eyes
Full lips
Small
hands
Long arms
Touch me,
I'm gone
Now
please
Make your
own cage
Now she
wants out
Now she
breaks out
Now I
Sit here
and I sigh
'Cause the
girl has gone back home to Germany
I can't
Break
through
And get to
Patricia,
Patricia
Patricia,
Patricia

Civilized Man
There are
walls just to get to you
You can
hit me till I’m black and blue
You set me
up
Not gonna
fall
Run
away
Went to
sleep a long time ago
Several
years since I hurt anybody
Don’t wake
me up
Let me
sleep
Won’t do
you no good
Just keep
to myself
Yeah yeah
ye-eh-eh
Nobody
want a part of this
It’s hard
to be a civilized man
Times a
woman with just what I am
Woah catch
yourself
Wanna wind
up in jail?
Better
smile and watch football
Civilized
man
I ain’t no
civilized man
Civilized
man
Wasn’t
born to be a civilized man
That’s
it, I ain’t got no more to say
For What I Need
I'm goin'
swimmin' now
Get up
your stream, baby
Gonna get
wet yeah
For what
I need
What I
need
Is you
baby
Yeah I'm
goin' climbing now
I'm gonna
get high
Up your
peaks baby
For what
I need
What I
need
Is you
baby
I don't
get if you put it in my way
Not nearly
Not ever
since I met you
Now I'm
like a heat seeking missile, baby
For what
I need
What I
need
Is you
baby
I'm goin'
walking now
The only
problem
Up a
[unclear] road
I said the
only problem is
Get home
to you baby
If I don't
get to you
I'm gonna
go insane
For what
I need
What I
need
Is you
baby
Yeah
I don't
care
What kind
of hole is in the ground
I don't
care
What kind
of ocean is in between me and you
Oh baby I
ain't gonna get halfway
I'm
gettin' to you
Watch out
[laughs]
Watch out
Long Time
I
remember
What you
told me
Last time
I said I wanted you
A crooked
smile played
'Cross
your lips
And you
said
Damn all
you men are just the same
And it's
been a long time
That's
granted
But I bet
you haven't changed
It's been
a long time
Since I
was okay, okay
Yeah
In the
years we
Spent
together
I fell in
love with your honesty
You never
told me that
Your sweet
words
Were never
meant to apply to me
And it's
been a long time
That's
granted
But I bet
you haven't changed
It's been
a long time
Since I
was okay, okay

Every Man
Every
mornin'
Under the
big yellow sun
A boy
named Pedro
He's the
lucky one
Can't read
or write
Never been
to school
Pedro
picks coffee in Brazil
He no fool
You
remember Billy Jack
How 'bout
brother Sam
Jumped
from a window last night
Somewhere
in Amsterdam
Fool done
broke his neck
Broke his
lover's heart
She cried
and shook her head
Now
they're worlds apart
Every man
thinks god is on his side
Ain't that
true
Ain't that
true
Every man
thinks god is on his side
Ain't that
you
Ain't that
you
Yea-eah
Lately
I've been feelin' strange
Yeah maybe
a little afraid
Maybe
'cause we live and die
In a world
we never made
Sometimes
it's so damn hard
To believe
in what is true
And if
you'll be there for me
I will be
there for you
Every man
thinks god is on his side
Ain't that
true
Ain't that
true
Every man
thinks god is on his side
Ain't that
you
Ain't that
you
Yea-eah
Every man
thinks god is on his side
Ain't that
true
Ain't that
true
Every man
thinks god is on his side
Ain't that
you
Ain't that
you
New Man
Time of breaking through to you
Don’t mean as much today as
Yesterday
Now I see I was a fool
Hungry for a boot to step on me
I don’t care why you cut me
I’m not giving you a second
chance
You can hide there by the sea
Take revenge on men who want
romance
If you ever see me out
With my new french girlfriend
too
There won’t ever be a doubt
That I don’t care what you do
This Town
Well you
didn't even care
What they
said about you
And you
ran away from there
Made a
home
And you
filled it
With a
candle
On a
cinder block
And a
mattress on the floor
And this
town baby, this town baby
It's gonna
be ours,
And this
town baby, this town baby
It's gonna
be ours, uh huh huh
You find
a man
And he
swears he will protect you
From the
dark
And you
love him
And you
try a little harder
And it
feels good
And you
don't give a damn
And this
town baby, this town baby
It's gonna
be ours,
And this
town baby, this town baby
It's gonna
be ours, uh huh huh
I've got
a job at the hotel
And the
car runs good
Billy's
moving out
Got my
place
And I got
me a plan
How to
make a little money
And I take
you along
If you
just look at me
And this
town baby, this town baby
It's gonna
be ours,
And this
town baby, this town baby
It's gonna
be ours, uh huh huh
Runaway
Hope I
meet you on a good day
When I'm
feeling all myself
Don't be
startled if I runaway
Especially
if you smile and really ring my bell
Hope you
take it in a good way
when I
show myself to you
I wouldn't
worry about it anyway
I have
soft skin and scars are nothing new
Please,
no promises, don't wanna hear the words
Nothing
you can say that I haven't already heard
Please, no
promises, let's just pass the time
Come and
sit with me and give me your eyes
We can
find ourselves a quiet room
And let
our hands run free
You can
tickle underneath my arm
All the
way down to behind my bended knee
Please,
no promises, don't wanna hear the words
Nothing
you can say that I haven't already heard
Please, no
promises, let's just pass the time
Come and
sit with me and give me your eyes
When we
made ourselves that quiet place
And the
world was just us two
I hope
that you wont runaway
We can
stay there
And make
us something new.
Katie
I'm
through with pastry,
No more
sticky bun cherry tarts
I want a
good girl,
one who
rocks but has a decent heart
Well I've
been waiting
Now I'm
sick of that
I think I
saw you...
Katie,
come out and play
I've got a
present
For you
today
It's got
your name on it
I hope I
spelled it right
She's got
tattoos,
Runnin
down underneath her shirt
She wears
long sleeves
So you
can't guess what's on her
But the
coolest one
She can't
hide
Yeah the
coolest one
Says Dad
Katie
come out and play
I've got a
secret for you today
I think
you're pretty
I wanted
you to know
This is
pointless
She's
already got a guy
Now or
never
Hit on her
and make her life awry
But I
don't care
I'll find
another one
No I don't
care
(spoken)
Maybe
she's got a best friend or something
Katie
come out and play
I've got a
secret for you today
I think I
love you
Though I
dont know you well
Over Now
It's over
now
I think I
get this
It's been
years
Since I
saw your face
But now I
don't want
To hear
from you
Don't want
to hear about anyone
Or
anything for awhile
Goodbye...
sweetheart
I'll be
there
By the
water
Keep your
toes dry
Nobody
heard what you had to say
Kisses
whisper "stay away"
They make
me feel
like that
again
Dont be
scared
Let me
hold you
Let me
take you there
I want
you so
I want
you... sooooo
I want you
so... what
Bad
We met,
we smiled
I put my
arm around you
the camera
flashed and it was over
my face
was flush
you turned
and walked away
but in my
pocket was your number
and I'm
thinking
who's that
girl who smiles and hides at the same time
I really
think she's got issues
the way
she looks at me I can tell what a kiss
brings
and if I
taste her pain is that a crime
that
night
we're
upstairs in my room
I'm trying
to ply you
with
champagne and caviar
but you
just wrinkle up your face
won't get
off second base
I'm
trippin' on how strong you are
oh my toes
start dancing when you kiss me
you pull
me down and I like it
hey my
head explodes and I know something's hit me
you make
me want to be BAD... YEAH
I am a
monkey behind glass
turn on
the lights have a laugh
get up you
filthy thing and dance
and you
would come across the sea
give me
kisses that would speak
of your
seven lonely oceans
who are
you to smile and hide at the same time
I really
like your issues
the way
you look at me I can tell what a kiss brings
you make
me want to be BAD... YEAH
Smile
In, I'm falling in
I didn't want to
Not so fast, boy
Slow,
Don't wanna hurt the girl
Get her a pretty box
You better fill it
And I get blinded when she opens
the door
It's like looking into the sun,
you know
And I'm just blinkin', mumblin',
starin' at my shoes
And she just looks at me
And smiles
Smiles
Smiles
So, there we go again
And it feels so good
To fall up and down
Damn, it's 2 AM again
And she kisses me goodbye
For the sixteenth time in the
night
Driving home, it's 5 AM
And I look at the sun come up
above the hills
And the clouds are turning pink
and green
And all I can see is her eyes
Eyes
Eyes
I get blinded when she opens the
door
It's like looking into the sun,
you know
And I'm just blinkin', mumblin',
starin' at my shoes
She just looks at me
And smiles
Smiles
Smiles
Angel
She comes home to me after a
hard night's work
Falls in my arms and sleeps like
a bird
Startle, wakes up, like she
don't know me
Cocks back her fist like she's
going to slug me
Like, who are you anyway
And what are you doing to me?
She's an angel
But she can't see it
She's got wings,
But she can't feel 'em
She's an angel
But she can't see it
But she's flying above me every
day
Every day of my life
Bright diamond eyes with daggers
beneath them
She carries the chains of a
million decisions
That weren't even hers to begin
with anyway
But she carries them all
All the people around her
Never even notice that she's
very very tired
She's an angel
But she can't see it
She's got wings
But she can't feel 'em
She's an angel
But she can't see it
But she's rising above me every
day
Every day of my life
Goodbye
I don't care what people're
gonna say about it
I just wanna sit here and drink
your sweet wine
Know you're gonna say you're too
young for me but
Think if I kiss you that would
be fine
Know how it's gonna end before
it ever starts now
Gonna give me love sweeter than
pie
Part your lips as if you're
gonna kiss me
Say a word that's gonna break me
Bye, bye bye bye goodbye
Bye, bye bye bye goodbye
Christopher Robin gave old Pooh
up
Grown up, didn't need Pooh no
more
Babe, believe me this ain't the
first time
I've been thrown down on the
playroom floor
Bye, bye bye bye goodbye
Bye, bye bye bye goodbye
Bye bye baby, baby bye bye
Bye bye
Bye bye baby, baby
Sorry baby,
I'm just fast
Dangerous
I don't think you know my name
I think you'd leave me standing
in the rain
You're a pretty little thing,
got a thing for me
But you'd cut me open and let me
bleed
But I'm lookin' at you
With your long brown hair
Pretty little feet
Sparkling everywhere
You look so good
When you come my way
But I have to look down
When you talk to me
'Cause you're dangerous
Dangerous
Dangerous
And you don't even know it
One baby, two, maybe three more
years
You'll be a full hot baby, have
all your curves
And here's my little taste of
irony
You'll be a too-hot baby, too
good for me
But I'll be looking at you
With your long brown hair
Pretty little feet
Sparkling everywhere
You look so good
When you come my way
But I have to look down
When you talk to me
'Cause you're dangerous
Dangerous
Dangerous
And you don't even know it
So little baby, you better stay
set
Play with fire when you get too
wet
So set me down and leave me be
You'll find a devil when you
unchain me
But I'll be looking at you
With your long brown hair
Pretty little feet
Sparkling everywhere
You look so good
When you come my way
But I have to look down
When you talk to me
'Cause you're dangerous
Dangerous
Dangerous
And you don't even know it
