Detective Nick Wolfe got to know Amanda while investigating a case, in 1998. In order to prove she was Immortal, Amanda shot herself in front of him.
Disillusioned, he quit the police force after his partner Claudia Hoffman was killed and his mentor betrayed him. He leaves the force but cannot abandon his pledge to "protect and serve."
His ex-wife Lauren Wolfe was killed by evil Immortal Dr. Julian Heller, accused of selling human organs on the black market. Afterwards, Nick hunted Heller down and beheaded him, although yet a pre Immortal and not aware of his immortality.
His first death was in 1999, after Amanda shot him — a slow-acting poison was stealing his life and, to trigger immortality, it is necessary a violent death.

Nick vingou a morte de Lauren cortando a cabeça de Heller, apesar de não ter a menor ideia sobre sua imortalidade.
Ele morreu pela primeira vez em 1999, após Amanda atirar nele, para evitar que morresse lentamente — ele tinha sido envenenado pelo Imortal Evan Peyton. Se assim fosse, a Imortalidade, que deve ser despertada por uma morte violenta, não aconteceria e Nick morreria definitivamente.
