Strange
World features two scientists trying to find the truth behind the most
bizarre cases: Dr. Paul Turner (Tim Guinee) and Dr. Sydney MacMillan (Kristin
Lehman),
Turner, graduated
by the Johns Hopkins University, is a former USAMRIID (Army Medical Research
Institute for Infectious Diseases) Captain who had been part of an elite
team sent to investigate the release of toxins from a top-secret bombing
raid in Iraq, in 1991. On the occasion, he and his partner were accidentally
infected with the toxin, which gave them a rare, incurable and fatal anemia.
Back to the USA, Turner starts his treatment with Dr. MacMillan, but it
doesn't come along well. When he is near to death, a mysterious Asian woman
(Vivian Wu) appears in the hospital and gives him a medicine which cures
his syndrome — as long as he continues to take it forever. After his recovery,
Turner and MacMillan (now his girlfriend) start investigating cases where
science seems to be misused by people who like to play God. In their investigations,
the couple count on former Turner's colleague Major Lynne Reese (Saundra
Quarterman).
Peter Wingfield
plays Dr. Terrance Shepard, who seems to be behind all the mysterious
cases Turner and MacMillan investigate — he is one of those people who
likes to play God.
Strange
World had only one season — the show was canceled after the airing
of just 3 episodes in the USA (ABC). However, in several countries (like
France, Germany and Ireland), all episodes had a normal run. In Brazil,
it was broadcast (dubbed in Portuguese) by Fox as well as Globo TV, the
biggest Brazilian network. Peter appears on 3 out of 13 episodes.

e da Drª Sydney MacMillan (Kristin Lehman) em busca da verdade.
Turner, médico
formado pela
Johns Hopkins University, foi Capitão do Exército
americano (USAMRIID - Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious
Diseases) e esteve na Guerra do Golfo (1991), onde foi exposto a um
agente biológico desconhecido.
Após
seis anos lutando contra a Síndrome da Guerra do Golfo (tendo como
médica a Drª MacMillan) sem obter nenhum sucesso, ele recebe
no hospital a visita de uma misteriosa mulher japonesa (Vivian Wu) que
lhe dá uma substância que leva sua doença ao estado
de remissão — contanto que ele sempre tome a medicação.
Meses após
sua miraculosa recuperação, e agora namorando sua ex-médica,
Turner volta ao exército como Investigador Especial, para investigar
abusos criminosos da ciência — porque às vezes, os cientistas
brincam de Deus e rompem limites que não deveriam ser rompidos.
Em seu trabalho, Turner conta com a ajuda da Major Lynne Reese (Saundra
Quarterman), antiga colega dos tempos da Guerra do Golfo.
O personagem
de Peter Wingfield é o misterioso Dr. Terrance Shepard. Ele
aparece na vida de Sydney e diz a ela que Turner deve parar de tomar o
medicamento fornecido pela mulher asiática — a substância,
na verdade, é que estaria causando a doença. Bastante persuasivo,
Shepard convence Sydney e as consequências são trágicas.
Shepard é, na verdade, um daqueles cientistas que gostam de brincar
de Deus — ele é o cabeça de um projeto para a criação
de uma nova raça, perfeita, e está por trás das muitas
coisas estranhas que o casal Turner/MacMillan vinham investigando nos últimos
anos.
A série
canadense-americana Strange World no Brasil recebeu o nome de Enigma,
na Globo, e Um Mundo Sem Limites, no canal Fox. Strange World
teve apenas uma temporada (1999).
